OYFP Partner Profile: Nazareth Housing

Founded in 1983, Nazareth Housing is a non–sectarian organization on the Lower East Side of Manhattan dedicated to reducing homelessness and promoting family self-sufficiency. Nazareth emphasizes long-term survival and an improved quality of life for the very low-income families that it serves.

Families reach Nazareth in crisis. Those families entering Nazareth’s transitional housing program are most likely to be headed by a single mother with young children, who is fleeing an overcrowded and possibly dangerous living situation. The family’s lack of housing is usually accompanied by other serious barriers to self-sufficiency, such as limited education, lack of job experience and a history of trauma.

A recognized leader for its expertise on low-income housing, Nazareth opened New York’s first transitional housing facility for families. Currently Nazareth manages twenty-seven permanent apartments for low-income, elderly and disabled families as well as eleven units for homeless families.
